UK Nationals

OK, so I finished 3-4 in the Nationals but I was actually quite satisfied with that result. I was using a Terrakion\Groudon deck. No Mewtwo or Tornadus as Jordan was using those in his deck. I was expecting to play against  mostly electric and dark decks, both being weak to my fighting Pokes. I knew that most of the other masters' decks would probably have Tornadus and to counteract this I padded my deck out with Lost Removers and Enhanced Hammers to get rid of the DCEs that would be attached to Tornadus to halt its attacks,  giving me a chance to get some good hits in. Most of the time this worked well and was quite effective, especially using additional Crushing Hammers if the dice rolled in my favour.

My first game went to the wire but I was outclassed by a much better player - Tom Hall, who had already earned a trip to the Worlds. My second match was against an all electric deck and my opponent never took one prize card.

The next 3 matches were all against Darkrai\Tornadus\Mewtwo - lost 2, won 1 but even in the 2 games I lost there was only one prize card in it and all  3 games went to the time limit.

In game 6, I came up against Cobalion. I'd never played against that deck before so didn't know what to expect. Unfortunately half way through the game  I made  an error by using double Lost Remover on the wrong Cobalion. In the end, even though I only had one prize card left I couldn't do enough against his other Cobalion with an Eviolite and 4 special metal reducing the power of my attack and he took me down with Iron Breaker.

In my final match, I played the one deck type I didn't want to come up against - Vileplume's Trainer lockout. My deck depended heavily on trainers - Hammers, EXP share, Catcher and Switch and without being able to use those I knew it was going to be difficult and to top it all my opponent was our very own Joanna.  The game went to time and somehow it went my way, but only just.

I think I'll continue with Terrakion and Groudon for a while, I know Tornadus will be staying around for a while but at least Vileplume will be out of format soon.

Since the release of Dragons Exalted my deck has changed a bit as I have now added in 3 Stunfisk. Stunfisk is a great opener and can quickly start adding damage to benched Pokemon using Muddy Water which can really help Groudon EX later on to make full use of his Giant Claw attack .

Trainers are important in this deck – you need Catchers to get your opponent’s Pokemon off the bench, Switch to swap out your active Pokemon when needed (Terrakion and Groudon have high retreat costs and you don’t want to discard their energies) and EXP Share so that if your active gets KO’d you don’t lose all the energies.

Another deck using fighting Pokemon like Terrakion is a new idea which also has Trubbish/Garbodor in the deck. You don’t use Garbodor to do any attacks but use his ability, Garbotoxin, to prevent your opponent using any abilities. If your opponents are playing Darkrai and Eeels decks, they will depend heavily on abilities so if you can get Garbodor on your bench you can really slow your opponent down. You’ll need to attach a Tool card to Garbodor to use Garbotoxin so make sure you have enough of those in your deck.

Both these decks are classed as Tier 2 decks, meaning they’re not as good as Tier 1 decks like Darkrai/Hydreigon and Zeels but they can be a bit cheaper to put together.

If you want to make a similar deck to either of these they are both listed in the competitive decks on our website here http://suttoncoldfieldpokeclub.weebly.com/uploads/1/1/3/9/11393046/competitive_decks.pdf

Remember, even if you don’t have all the cards yet to make up the exact same list you can always swap a few cards out or better still use proxy cards to test your deck out at league and then, if you do want to play that deck in a tournament you may be able to borrow the cards you need off a fellow league player.
